Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street 1982 Tour Cast, starring Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Lovett and George Hearn as Sweeney Todd. Part 17 includes “A Little Priest”, the song that wonderfully showcases the show’s dark humour. Mrs. Lovett (Angela Lansbury) has a bright idea pop into her head and convinces Sweeney (George Hearn) to help her bake the corpses of his customers into delicious meat pies. I love the jigs Angela does throughout. Also: INTERMISSION. … sweeney todd demon …

I love the bit he’s trying to think of something to rhyme with blacksmith! Classic!

“It’s piping hot!” Where’s a rim-shot when you need it?

I think Lansbury was having WAY too much fun in this role. It makes it so much more fun for us to watch this!
TB version- great singing to listen to, This- better everything else, including how they sang the song.

As awesome as this is, after the newer version with Johnny Depp, this just seems like crap. I’m not sure if it’s a good or bad thing.

I love this song and this version is so much more funnier then the newer version. Though I like the newer version also.

Compared to some of the little priest songs, this is pretty good. I think the music in the film is better but then they could tweek it, in the theater it echos a lot! Thing is, I really don’t think this is “dark” enough, I mean it’s a pretty gruesome song (in such a great way!)

Well, it’s really supposed to be funny, just in a dark sort of way.
I think it’s pretty good. I also like the guy’s better than Depp’s…

The thing is, it’s not supposed to be super dark and angry like Burton loves portraying EVERYTHING as. It’s light and fun and that’s what makes it so gruesome.

“Awful lot of fat”
“only where it sat”
Haha
And
“Haven’t you got poet or something like that?”
“No you see the trouble with poet is how do you know it’s deceased?”
HAHA!

Exactly, the tone was set by the director and he chose an overly dark rendition. Depp and Bonham Carter could have easily brought out the humor (it did peek through in a few spots) .

She intentionally changed her tone to be dark and fit the mood. In musicals like this, having every voice trying to sound pretty as possible would be extremely dull.

I had the great pleasure of seeing Hearn and Lansbury twice in 1980 when they toured in Sweeney Todd…met them both after the show-they were GREAT…..

Mrs Lovett is a brilliant dancer =)

I completely agree! Mrs Lovett in Burton’s is RIDICULOUS. I love Helena Bonham Carter, but she just isn’t right for that part.
